On watching the newly released Ark DVD, I noticed that a new round lamp housing (or is this the return of what was left of the original?) had replaced the square housing which had been introduced in 'The Web Planet'. This was highlighted by the fact that the square housing had been used in the cobbled Police box prop at the Wimbledon location shoot that introduced Dodo at the end of 'The Massacre'.
I've knocked out a quick comparison chart showing which stories the lamps are used. The round lamp housing does not have the original fresnelled lamp but a plain cylindrical tube like the one used with the square lamp housing. This round lamp housing is also used in the 'Celestial Toymaker', and maybe in 'The Gunfighters', but was permanently replaced with the square lamp housing from 'The 'Savages' onwards. This lamp was probably the one that lasted pretty much until the end of the Pertwee era.

You're right. Nice. I guess we can put it down to natural wear and tear, they replaced things frequently back then, so I assume this was just another little niggly thing they replaced. Have to say though, I do prefer the round.
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

On the subject of the roof lamp, after a Google search for some TARDIS/Police Box related item I ended up looking at things far unconnected to the original search.

Anyway, I ended up at http://www.themindrobber.co.uk/ and one of the video clips posted on you tube shows the first full sized prop materialisation from The Reign Of terror.

What is interesting (well to me anyway) is the roof lamp not only flashes but makes the signs and windows flash.

Far from earth shattering information but it amused and intrigued me so I thought I would share  ;D

EDIT - I tried for about 15 minutes to get a cool you tube video here but alas my skills are apparently laking. Sorry you'll have to make do with the link  :-[

Once again I thank you for your expertise.

I did something like that and just got a white box, perhaps I didn't wait long enough (crap internet speed).

Well, we know there was an internal light in the prop that was used by itself.  See Curse of Peladon and Ark in Space.  It's possible they were originally wired together before being separated in the following story.  Also notice, silent materializing.
