here you see a 1:1 scale printout of my design photographed with my toy sonics and other scale reference

sizeref01.jpg

it's somewhat smaller than the original, being about the size of the 10th Doctor's (toy).
in fully collapsed mode, with the emitter removed, it is about the same length as the mini sonic torch.
my original intention was that the stem could be extended to match the length of the original sonic, approximated by the Matt Smith version, I just kept it short because I liked the look.

so what do you think of this scale?
do I need to beef it up?

Just a quick question- not that I'm planning to build something like this myself at all (Oh nooo!!!! Not EVER!!!), how do you plan to build the emitter? From what I can see it's going to be a full on CNC machined part. A little beyond most hand-held tools methinks.

my first thought was to build it up out of layers of 1mm thick metal like this:

Would you braze the layers together, or what?

Dammit, the more I look at that head the more I could swear I've seen something like it before.  I'm not saying you're copying, just that it really reminds me of something I can't quite place.

sink drain?
DS9?

I made a very quick paper model to test the overall dimensions before I went into full production.

A paper sonic? Well, that's certainly a new one! Although, marvelous technique for mapping out what you want to do 3-dimensionally. Great stuff, I can't wait to see when it's done!

Here's what I've been working on for the mechanical portion of the design breaking it down into the different parts.

I think the wood thing is a bit of an overstatement; he only said it couldn't un-stick a warped doorframe.

I hadn't noticed but my prototype has the handle on backwards.

I've done some shopping and found some rhinestone things that are perfect for the 'stunt' emitter, for the practical one I'll get one of the new sonic torches with the clear lens and stain it red. I'm thinking of wiring the light to a TRS plug (headphone jack) so that the emitter-head can be modular and still function.

If you have your matt smith sonic toy handy I can demonstrate how I see the telescopic action working:
hold the closed sonic vertically by the black grip in one hand, with the other hand gently turn the upper half of the sonic counter-clockwise relative to the handle until it clicks into place, then release.

I went into town yesterday and bought some of the led torches and a couple of David Tennant sonics as well as some assorted brass tubing which should suit most of my needs. The torches are from a different mould than the one I have and in any case are being replaced so I had to shop around. I'll  use the sound card from one of the sonics in my custom build and the other I thought I might modify put the button in the slider fill in crack texture and repaint etc.

As you can see I've removed the electronics from one of the sonics, I'll have to replace the wires as they were a bit flimsy so I've drawn a quick diagram to show what goes where. I'll tart up the handle of this sonic to avoid needlesly destroying more than one.
