Well, I beleive we ascertained it was a paint, but Purple said it was a satin car paint in a spray can...
Yours came in a pot?
So what is it called then and who makes it?

Hello all!

I think we all have asked the question, "what color blue is the 2010 NST"?  After reading various threads, the discussion has been, is the color a 'paint' or a 'stain' given the over all change in appearance in the color and the obvious wood grain effects that looks quite different than the 2005 MkI/II grain and weathering process.  The weathering process is rather involved after reading the tutorials in the past that Mr. Purpleblancemange gave us a while back.

I was convinced that the new color was a wood stain.  I decided to email a past TARDIS builder forum friend, Purple regarding this debate.  He believes that a spray on paint was used, possibly an automotive paint, but not a stain.  He did give me permission to mention his blog http://purpleblancmange.wordpress.com/2010/04/13/paint-your-wagon for reference, which Bill "the doctor' Rudloff has mentioned on another thread not too long ago. He used a spray primer on a piece of wood and a photo on his blog shows the comparison that is spot on in terms of the wood grain reveal.

I did received an anonymous package from the UK on Saturday with a small unlabeled metal tin.  The package did not indicate who sent it.  Low and beyold it was a blue paint!

I am at a loss for any specific paint information, as the pot was approximately a pint and half in size tin, no aersol.  The tin was steel with no labels.
I had to pour it into an airless sprayer and viola.  I had to use a thinner to clean it up though, so a petroleum base it is...
It's hard to say if it is indeed the correct color, but it sure looks darn close to me.  The question is it a stain or paint is answered here.  Also one would
conclude that if it was indeed a stain, how do you stain the metal lamp housing... Just a thought.

Here's a photo of the 2010 Display NST that I borrowed from PMC's thread for color comparisons to my sample piece of wood.

Paul, I will work on getting a color match on it!  Would that be helpful? I am not attempting to vex here.  I am trying to help.
Let me know if you there is anything else I can do.  Through all this, at least we now know this is not a stain!

I didn't mean you Jon, I meant your mysterious package sender....

What would be really good (for me) is if someone knew the color code for the box I'm building :P
What would be really good for everyone wanting to build the 2010 box is if you took a sample of said paint to a paint shop and had them match it to get the color code ;)

I think it's pretty wonderful to get a pot of paint in the mail...even without a label...colors can be matched.
I was wondering, has anyone tried aniline dyes? I used them in college to dye scenery....
http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Decorative_Materials___Coloring___Aniline_Powder_Dye___aniline_dye
and they come in lots of colors.
OH...back in the day I used them to make something called French Enamel Varnish....blend the powder with alcohol and add to shellac.
beautiful stuff...but toxic.

You know, you could go to a car painting place or a Subaru dealer that also has autobody capabilities and ask them to see if that paint sample matches the paint they would use for the Subaru Legacy Blue.  Most of these places will have paint swatch books that can help pin it down.

In the US, you could go to any auto paint supply store and they would have sample sheets of most manufacturer car paints. Unlike house paint where there is a rainbow of colors and many shades of each, there are very few actual different colors on cars.

This looks like a handy Subaru paint code chart: http://www.drmotorsport.co.uk/Subaru%20Paint%20Codes.htm

I know I managed to pull the code for legacy blue, I beleive it was 55a, it's somewhere in the thread for Matt's tardis

Here's what you posted... too bad that coesn't correspond to anything in that chart I found. Maybe somebody in the UK could check with that company on the 55A listed below?

"Can anyone shed any light on this?
I looked it up and Liberty Blue is actually a Pearlescent metallic paint....

Year          Color                          Code    Type
1996   -   LIBERTY BLUE PEARL   55A      METALLIC"

I did some research on this particular color and found out the following information:

In the US, there is a different color name for 55A.

Year                    Color                 Code         Type
2000     -    SYDNEY BLUE PRI          55A        METALLIC

I don't know if this is the exact match between these two vehicles, given that the year differences, but the color code number is the same....

I am going to call the Subaru dealer for a color swatch for comparison.

I hope this helps and I will keep you all posted!

Cheers,
Jon

It could be, there is a slight typo in what I posted, the - after 1996 is to signify that the paint is still in used, otherwise there is a date for when it was discontinued, for context purposes, here is the link to where I got the information:

Jon,
I've merged your 2010 Paint colour topic into this one, which is split from PMC's New TARDIS and Doctor thread.
