If your making a long corridor, or a new room that's non canon, but want it to look authentic, how do you place your roundels walls? Has anyone in show or book ever mentioned why some grey roundels walls and some glowing roundel walls are placed or spaced apart the way they are? What's the rule of thumb here?

I don't think there was ever any set pattern. I think in the studio the roundels were lit when they managed to get a light behind them without something in the way casting a shadow. If it wasn't convenient, the panel was simply unlit. Sometimes the panels were unlit in the main console room - presumably because one of the other sets was taking up the available space.
