Quote from: purpleblancmange board=build thread=1115023419 post=1122378068You can still get near matches for the Bow or "D" handle here in the UK, the ones on the new TARDIS prop are brass plated and you can readily get them from B&Q for about £4 a piece.

Pardon the ignorance of an American, but who exactly are B&Q and do they have a website?

Bill "the Doctor" Rudloff

Yep - guilty, I'm afraid.  A group of us built this TARDIS back in 1986 (styling ourselves "The TARDIS Assemblers Union - Local 42"), but in the end I did about 80% of the design and 60% of the financing and labor on the initial build (about half the time correcting problems caused by some of the others, unfortunately).  The rest of the group more or less abandoned ownership to me over the years and I did the cosmetic refit by myself (electrical, paint, handles and signs), but oddly enough I've never actually had it in my garage (it would be kind of difficult to bring to Gally every year if I did, now that I live 700 miles away from it - thank Gallifrey for all the TARDIS Movers every year).

Lots of little problems with her, design wise, as you can imagine considering the lack of info and resources like this at the time, and that some of the design decisions were made by committee (with the worst ones when I was late for a meeting and cutting had already started by the time I arrived - Lesson of the day: NEVER be late to a meeting when someone might have a saw in their hands!).

Still, she's going on 20 years old and despite heavy use over those years (I'd say she's been taken apart and put back together again around 100 times) she's still as strong as ever, so I'd say we built her to last.

My only real regret was in not getting all the actors and production people who have been in our TARDIS over the years to sign her somewhere on the inside.  Sigh.  Live and learn.

BTW - The secret to rapid disassembly and reassembly of a collapsible TARDIS - hinge pins!  She's held together by nothing but removable pin hinges.

B&Q are a chain of DIY superstores. Think they have a web site.

Word of advice to all while on the DIY superstore topic.

I bought a bow type handle from Wicks for £2.80 (only a small one!). Two days later I found EXACT same handle in Wilkinsons for 89p!

I wasn't happy >:(

"B&Q is the number one DIY retailer in Europe and the third largest in the world..."

http://www.diy.com

For the Brits among us, our American and Canadian members will sometimes  refer to Home Depot (who are the largest in the world...).

Not sure who gets the number 2 slot. It might be Lowes.

Trivia: it's Block and Quayle.

So is there any known wording for the notice behind the phone door?
Now I have a box there with a phone in it, it seems like an obvious place to put another little piece of history...

Well, that's bloody annoying - the www.diy.com site doesn't appear to have anything like them.  Must be a severely contracted version of what they have available in-store.  Argh!

Quick look through the more extensive www.homedepot.com site yielded similar nothingness.  Experience with walk-in visits at Home Despot in the past is that when it comes to simple D-handles they tend to have the cheap stamped versions so common here in the States (which our TARDIS was originally fitted with for lack of anything better).

Live too far away from any metropolitan areas these days to just walk in and have a look.

Finding a good solid forged or cast piece, much less one with four vertically arranged screw holes, has always been a challenge here.  :'(

Looks authentic, but I don't think it' s been in there since the birth of the box.

The reference to 'Push button on telephone' doesn't seem to refer to original phone as the receiver just needed lifting.

It doesn't look original, I'll agree, or certainly not identical to a pre-war sign. It's a lot better than nothing though.

(Then again... 'approxi-matey' seems a bit chummy for the modern Metropolitan police.)

[EDIT: What an ill-tempered remark! I wrote that just after they'd shot that plumber chap dead for allegedly wearing an inappropriate jacket.]

Thanks Mark!

I've laid out something similar in MS Word. Will put up a PDF in due course. Now I just need to cut a piece of plastic to go over the top and screw it in place...

And yes, the spelling and grammar are both charming  ;D

Thanks Mark!

Here's the PDF I made up (which is close, but it's the wrong font).

and here's a picture of it installed behind a piece of acrylic in my box.

Nice to have a little historical reference in there, and the cubby definitely needed something!.

I'm hoping somebody here should be able to help with this question.

I found these models (well  they obviously weren't lost but I don't know which site I found them!) and was wondering who made these wonderful miniatures?

Also, any idea what scale yhey are?

If they're miniatures (damn they're good), they're be the work of a Builders guild member called something doc Doc49153 who has made a up a number of models at (I think) about 1.5 feet high and absolutely nails the Pertwee box.  I cna't find his album over on the guild site anymore so he might have de-registered but havea poke around because his work is incredible.
