Thanks for the info. :)
Do you realise that I just made 3 consecutive posts, weird, next time I'll edit them into paragraphs.

lol ;D

Its pretty annoying when posting. As soon as I hit "Post Reply" I always remember something that I meant to include!

I like the new look of the site, particularly impressed with spell check.

Does anyone else think the new series TARDIS bears resemblance to the wooden police box with a real phone inside that came out early 90's?

Yes Mark!

I have one in my hallway and each time I look at it, its proportions remind me of the new series box!

I think it was released in 1988/89 but I got mine slightly damaged from a phone shop in Leicester many years later. I resprayed it, put more accurate Signage on it and rigged a flashing circuit to the lamp (which originally was solid wood) I know it won't be as collectable if its not in original condition but I recieved it in bad nick anyway...

All the best,

The Doctor.

Just out of interest what sort of phones would have been used in PB's over time, would they have been dial out or direct line. I saw an old brakelight phone on the web that was apparently used for the same purpose in Korea.

Glad it's not just me! I noticed the other day when I dusted mine. The panels are the same, the corner post caps are too.

Oddly enough, mine was bought "slightly damaged" from a BT shop. I still have box somewhere, only problem is the actual phone has gone walkies!

There is a picture earlier in this thread of the type of phone originally used in the Met boxes (page 2). That said, I bought one on ebay that isnt authentic but I think will look the part (This too is posted).

The lines were direct to the district police station, although the one in the Sheffield box can now get an outside line too (I tried ;D).

Oh - what type of telephone is in the Sheffield box?

Dial-less makes sense.  There are pictures showing a few telephone types in Met boxes - e.g. candlestick, 200 series, and some odd thing with the receiver over the dial.  My fave is the wall-mounted one attached to the back door of the telephone compartment, presumably so that it would swing in to the box and be easily used from inside.

It is interesting to note that the tardis uses a mark 2 body with a mark 3 colour scheme

You can just about make out a phone in this interior shot of the Sheffield box.

There is another identical one behind the phone panel (well it was identical until it was vandalised >:(, so the "free for use" phone is kept locked.

I'm still trying (in vain it would seem) to locate the original phone, roof light and various plaques that belonged to the box originally.

What is the stepping on the corner posts? It looks about an inch high on the top and in maybe three-quarters? Also is there any chamfering anywhere on the box as this makes things look more realistic when done in 3d

(amended june 18)
how wide are the margins on the sign boxes and what colour is the StGA badge

The way I measured it, the corner post caps are about 1 inch high and are set back very little possibbly less than 1/4 inch.
[noIMG]http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/Mark7081/CornerPostProfile.jpg[/img]

As for chamfering, well its practically everywhere!

Each of the steps on the roof have a slight slope, the top of the sign lintels boxes have a slope, the central divider in between each of the "door" sections has slopes to each side and the base has a slope too (its angled on the edge and then there is a slight slope up to the wall sections.

If you're going the full hog, then the interior has a floor which slopes to wards the front (I suppose this is to make sweeping up easier, straight out of the door!

The St. Johns badge. Well it is black and white, although there isn't one on the Crich box, and from what Ironageman said, Barnet didn't have one when he visited it ???

When you say margins on the sign box, which bit do you actually mean?

If anyone is interested, I've re-drawn one of the Mackenzie Trench drawings. It was done on "Paint" (as thats all I have :'() but does show all the chamfering/slopes etc. Its not perfect and does not contain measurements as yet.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y194/Mark7081/MackenzieRe-drawn.jpg

I've posted the picture this way as it is quite large.

The door handles aren't right and the picture is not 100% acurate to scale (it's more of a building aid than blueprint!)

Use it as you wish (but credit where credits due)

"When you say margins on the sign box, which bit do you actually mean?"
You've got the glassy signy bit the insety bordery bit and the marginy holdy ony bit.
In other words the wide bits with the bolts in them.

Why, thank you TG.

Right I see what you mean Tele.

I measured the side marginy holdy on bit thingys at Crich as being 7.66" (I'm working on 7" for my build" with the top and bottom marginy bit being 3/4".

There are slight measurement differences between the Crich/Barnet/Trench Blueprints especially from the sign box upwards. The side marginy holdy thing at Barnet appears to be longer than at Crich.

Trench shows them as being 6" by 6" with no top margin, I can only assume that the signage hadn't been finalised at the time they were drawn up

Btw I use 3dmax.
I am also quite good with PhotoShop except that someone upgraded me from v5 to v7 which is obviously inferior for most uses although I still get by :P
