Has anyone ever considered making a version of the new sonic screwdriver that includes some of the features not included in the final prop?

In what way not featured on the final prop?  What would you add? :)

tPresumably The swivelling head and console-plug/foot?  These were in the concept art that Purple has shared at some point.   Oh, the imac stlye light thing would be nice but I've never heard of anyone even mooting building one for real - be nice to see one though!   :)

Oh yeah, the original design (based partly on Dan Walker's beloved Apple Notebook) - the head was supposed to be motor driven so that it could rotate to any given angle or direction, the extending barrel was to have pulsating light up veins in it and the bottom end of the device was supposed to open to reveal a docking port for the recharger on the console.

That latter element still kind of survives in the show, in the Slitheen story, you can clearly see the sonic plugged into the console as it recharges.  I think it's in the scene where the Doctor slips off quietly in the TARDIS to check something or other out.

Nice renders there, by the way.

I'm assuming that at this point most of us at least have the character options toy, is there anything you would change to make your sonic screwdriver a more satisfying replica? Of course the ultimate upgrade would be to get one that actually works, anyone have any ideas on that score?

Not me... Though I do prefer the original, and to be honest I'm not a big one for "collectibles". I have the TARDIS cookie jar and I have been given a couple of the Marks and Spencer mini daleks (which I do like loads, but probably wouldn't have bought myself).

The only collectible that I would LOVE to own is that Hartnell Console that was being built in another thread for "Iconic Replicas".

I held off on getting the sonic for quite a while myself 'till one day I just wanted one. Other than that I have most of the DVDs some books, mostly nonfiction. I just got myself a 1/4 scale radio controlled K-9 which seems to be reasonably accurate and quite an interesting fusion of the two show used props but this thread  is really for sonic screwdrivers not collectables so maybe we should move this discussion elsewhere on the board. ;)

Well if you want a decent sonic screwdriver from the new series, MFX (the people who make the prosthetics and the Cybermen for the show) are producing an accurate 1:1 scale replica, turned from alluminium with acrylic parts - should be here in the summer.  No idea what the cost will be yet.

That said, I hear that there's another company out there that's going to do the same thing as well as the classic version.  More news if I hear of any more.

If I knew enough about fabricating plastic parts and electronics I would totally revamp my Character Options SS to be similar to the way the concept SS was supposed to be.

I like the idea of the swivelling emitter head and the opening based for "recharging it".

I would think that the light up veins that Purple Blancmange mentioned could be accomplished using fiber optic threads running through the extending piece.   ::)  But then again I have no idea how to do that.  LOL!!!

Still I would LOVE to have a metal prop version that was like the concept version.   ;D  Anybody want to make me one???   ;)

New additions? hmm...

How about a can opener and one of those things that make julienned fries? I am sure the doc would need those on one of his adventures?

I like to use mine for light switch raves...so maybe a strobe?

given the choice would you prefer one with a ceramic handle or metalic with crackle glaze like the prop?

Probably the second one.  I would be afraid the handle would break if I dropped it and I am prone to dropping things.

Mine actually does work.  Somewhat that is.

I have these two electronic toys that are light and sound sensetive and all I have to do to switch them on is point the SS at them and activate it.    ::) Yeah I know it ain't much but is entertains me.  LOL!!!

It would be great if you could get a garage door opener made to look like a sonic screwdriver!
