Has anyone made one? I would really like one and am looking for tips on the best way to go about making one. ie. Plastic, wood ect.

I would think that a metal reinforce plastic covered handle might be wise, but then it also might be too heavy and a bit tough to make.

Keeping in mind that I don't have any skills working with wood or plastic, what would you say would be a good bet?

Thanks for any help.

Nice one though exilea, good luck that you have too, I've been looking for those for a while.

I started one once. A friend of mine, many years ago, went down the route of using car body filler. And it looked great, but the end kept falling off...

So I went down the route of using a bent coat hanger on the inside (doing a full loop).

It was a long time ago, and I never finished it though.

Have you seen the way Celation has built the clear rings within his console rotor?  You can use the same technique to make the handle; buy some acrylic rod or tube, heat it gently in the oven and then curve it around to the right shape.  Once done, top and tail it will hemis of the correct size and you're done - ready for sticking on a brolly.

Some time ago I was sent a cast from McCoy's umbrella handle, but whoever did it, cocked making the moulds right up, so the casting is totally useless.  Though I guess it may have its use as a profile guide.  It's another thing to add to the ever growing list of things to do... but probably won't.

more good ideas. I suppose I need to look at my umbrella and see ho I could attach it in the first place. I wonder if learning how to make an umbrella from scratch wouldn't be wise to make the center rod stronger then the thin tin rolled metal.

Having once, many years ago, repaired an umbrella many times (until the fabric started wearing out) I can tell you its not too hard.

Though in terms of sourcing parts and stitching waterproof fabric, I would suggest you'd be better off dismantling a ready made umbrella and replacing potentially weak parts like the central rod, rather than  building it from scratch.

Go for it! It'll probably be better made, stronger and longer lasting than the one they made for the show :)

Just like the Box plans I'll have to wait till the wedding is over as we are paying for it ourselves, but I'd like to give this a go.

I've made my own umbrella recently.  Carved from MDF.

I am drooling right now. How did you connect it to the umbrella itself?

I cut the existing handle off the umbrella, then drilled a 10mm hole into the new question mark handle and slotted it on to the umbrella shaft with a bit of clue.  Simple  ;D
